Hass avocado experts recommend storing unripe avocados at room temperature for 4-5 days to ripen, while already ripened avocados can be refrigerated. To prevent half of an avocado from turning brown, coat it with lime or lemon juice and cover tightly with plastic wrap before refrigerating. Avoid storing avocados in water to prevent the growth of harmful pathogens. To speed up ripening, place avocados with ethylene-producing fruits like apples or bananas. Avoid removing the stem cap of avocados to prevent premature oxidation. Choose unripe, firm avocados if planning to eat them later.
