HRMI: Dire Human Rights Situation in China, Continuing Deterioration in Hong Kong

Reported 8 months ago

On June 19, 2024, an international human rights organization released data showing that China ranks lowest in multiple human rights standards, with Hong Kong's situation continuing to deteriorate, nearing China's levels in some aspects. The Human Rights Measurement Initiative, based in New Zealand, surveyed over 30 regions globally to assess various human rights standards and monitor changes in human rights conditions. The latest data reveals dire human rights conditions in China, especially in areas like freedom from state-level threats, forced disappearances, and the right to life. Hong Kong's scores decreased from the previous year, particularly in terms of freedom from state-level threats and civil liberties, showing a concerning trend towards aligning with China's scores. The report also assessed economic and social rights indicators until 2021, with China's housing rating as 'fair,' and aspects like food, health, and work rated as 'good.'
