Following the 0403 Hualien earthquake, Taroko National Park suffered severe damage, with areas like Taroko Gorge and Swallow Grotto requiring a thorough investigation and assessment for a 7-year reconstruction plan. The reconstruction is expected to gradually open some sections of the park by the end of 2024. Multiple phases of reconstruction, including emergency repair, facility safety enhancements, and recreation quality improvements, are planned for a total recovery cost of approximately 3 billion NTD. The Central Cross-Island Highway is also undergoing repairs with various sections expected to be completed by the end of this year.
