The Su-Hua Highway on Route 9 is a crucial road linking Hualien and northern Taiwan, but the Chongde to Heping section has unstable slopes prone to collapses during heavy rain, leading to frequent road closures. Following the Hualien earthquake in April, the local tourism industry has suffered with July booking rates plummeting to less than 20%, a decrease of over 60% compared to previous years. Operators are urging authorities to enhance road safety and improve traveler willingness. Despite government initiatives to stimulate tourism desire, including subsidies and events, July and August booking rates remain stagnant. Operators hope for stable land transport to reduce risks and encourage visitors to Hualien.
