President Tsai Ing-wen attended the 100th anniversary celebration of the founding of Huangpu Military Academy on June 16 at the Army Officer Academy, conducting a military parade and presiding over the ceremony as the Commander-in-Chief. Tsai, who previously identified as a 'pragmatic advocate for Taiwan independence,' drew attention by visiting the academy founded by Chiang Kai-shek, the first president of the Kuomintang party. In his speech, Tsai emphasized the presence of the spirit of Huangpu wherever the Republic of China exists, proclaiming that true military officers are those who fight for the survival and development of the ROC and the safety and well-being of the people in Taiwan and surrounding islands. Despite some controversy surrounding his remarks, Tsai reiterated his stance against surrendering and highlighted the goal of strengthening Taiwan's self-defense capabilities to resist Chinese aggression.
