Ignoring Passenger Safety: Heatwave in Mecca Causes Thousands to Overheat, Egypt Revokes Licenses of 16 Travel Agencies

Reported 8 months ago

As many as 1.8 million people traveled to Mecca for pilgrimage, with official reports indicating 531 deaths due to heatstroke, although fears suggest the number may reach into the thousands as temperatures soared above 50 degrees Celsius. Due to the significant deaths during the pilgrimage, the Egyptian government took action by revoking the licenses of 16 domestic travel agencies for failing to provide adequate preparations, resulting in fatal overheating among participants. Extreme temperatures in the region have become a deadly challenge, with experts urging action to control global warming to prevent such risks to pilgrims.
