Due to Taiwan's declining birth rate over the past decade, a total of 44 elementary schools have been merged, with 18 more set to cease operation in the 113th academic year, marking a record. This includes efforts like offering plane tickets to attract students at Hujiing Elementary School in Penghu County, which is down to only 2 students. While urban areas see the opening of new schools, the closure of schools in rural areas like Miaoli, Nantou, Chiayi, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, and Penghu raises concerns about potential village abandonment. The disparity in the impact of declining birth rates between urban and rural areas is evident through the closure of schools in various regions.
