On July 4, 2024, a fishing boat from Penghu, the Shengyuan Fu No. 8, was driven away by a Chinese coast guard ship in international waters. The Chinese coast guard ships approached the fishing boat and demanded it to leave, causing distress. The fishing boat called for help through radio, and the Penghu Coast Guard immediately dispatched three patrol boats to protect the fishing vessel. The Chinese coast guard ships continued to patrol in the area, despite being beyond the 12-nautical-mile enforcement line in the open sea. The incident raised concerns about China's disregard for international maritime laws.
