Increase in ADHD Diagnoses Among American Children

Reported 4 months ago

The number of ADHD diagnoses among American children has notably increased from 2016 to 2022 due to better understanding of the condition, improved mental health screenings, and effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, 7.1 million children and adolescents were diagnosed with ADHD, a million more than in 2016, with 58.1% having moderate to severe cases and 77.9% facing co-occurring disorders. There has been a decrease in medical treatment received, attributed to shortages of Adderall and disparities in access to treatment. Better awareness and less stigma around mental health have led to more accurate diagnoses, particularly recognizing differences in symptom presentation between boys and girls. Proper treatment is crucial as ADHD can lead to various health risks, but the data can guide policies for children's needs.
