Increase in Sea Urchins at Xiao Liuqiu Leads to Sting Injuries for Snorkeling Tourists

Reported 7 months ago

Recently, there has been a surge in sea urchins at the intertidal zone near Xiao Liuqiu in Pingtung, causing injuries to snorkeling tourists. Some tourists have been stung, leading to erysipelas that has not healed even after a month. To address the ecological damage caused by the 'Mei's Long-Spined Sea Urchin' and 'Aristotle's Lantern Sea Urchin,' the county government has decided to remove them from the conservation list starting from July 1st. In response to the injuries, the government is providing guidance on how to treat minor cases at home, but more severe cases will require medical treatment and tetanus vaccinations.
