In order to enter the semiconductor clean room, researchers at the University of Tokyo need to don special protective clothing and go through a decontamination process. The university partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company back in 2019, and has since established labs on campus. This initiative is part of a broader trend in Japan where companies like Sony, Toyota, and IBM are investing billions in a new semiconductor company to begin mass producing next-generation logic chips for smartphones and cars by 2027. As the importance of semiconductor technology grows, universities in Japan, including the University of Tokyo, are increasing enrollment in related programs to meet the industry demand. Japan aims to double its domestic chip production by 2030 with substantial government subsidies and investments, reflecting the country's recognition of the semiconductor's vital role in various sectors.
