India's Religious Gatherings Turn Tragic with 265 Deaths in Worst Incident Due to Slippery Steps

Reported 12 months ago

In the early hours of July 3, 2024, a serious stampede occurred at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh, India, resulting in at least 121 deaths, mostly women and children, making it one of the most severe stampedes in India in recent years. India, with various religious sects and fervent followers, often faces accidents or tragedies due to overcrowding or poor crowd control, especially during major festivals or ceremonies. In the past 20 years, India has seen several major stampede incidents related to religious events, such as the tragic event at Mandhardevi temple in Maharashtra in 2005 where over 265 Hindu devotees died due to slippery steps leading to the temple.
