India is set to witness the biggest surge in coal-fired power capacity in almost a decade as the country rushes to meet rising electricity demands. Despite pursuing clean-energy goals, India's reliance on coal persists due to rapid economic growth and severe heat waves. The country plans to add 15.4 gigawatts of new coal power by March 2025, with coal still accounting for the majority of electricity generation. Challenges such as inadequate energy storage hinder the expansion of renewable energy sources in the competitive power market, leading India to push forward with coal-based projects to meet growing energy needs.
