India is requesting power companies to procure equipment worth $33 billion this year to accelerate the addition of coal-fired power capacity due to the country's struggle to meet rising electricity demand. The move involves major power firms like NTPC, SJVN, Adani Power, and Essar Power, aiming to add 31 gigawatts in the next 5-6 years. The decision by the government to expedite the equipment orders comes after discussions held by Power Minister Manohar Lal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet to address the power shortfall caused by increased demand post-pandemic and economic growth.
