Recent months have seen Mainland China solidified as India's top source of imported steel, prompting concerns in the Indian industrial and governmental sectors. Indian steel plants have been calling on the local government to raise tariffs on Chinese steel. Discussions are underway by the Indian Steel Ministry and Commerce Ministry regarding the surge in imports, particularly the increase in cheap Chinese steel. India has become a net importer of finished steel, with China's shipments to India nearly doubling compared to the previous year. This trend continues, with India importing a record 1.1 million tons of finished steel in April-May 2024, a 19.8% increase year-on-year.
