A 14-year-old boy in India named Midrul died from brain-eating amoeba infection after swimming in a possibly contaminated pool near his home. This is the third fatal case in less than two months in the state of Kerala, India. The amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, enters the body through the nose and causes severe damage to the brain, leading to Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) with a high mortality rate of 97%. The CDC states that symptoms usually appear within 1 to 12 days and result in severe headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, and coma before death, typically within a week.
