The Department of Health announced a warning on June 11 as Taiwan saw 328 new local cases of COVID-19 last week, indicating the 6th wave of the Omicron outbreak. Health officials are worried as even infants are experiencing severe pneumonia, with Deputy Director General of the Centers for Disease Control Tseng Shu-hui estimating the epidemic peak to occur in August and September before declining. The rise in cases has prompted concern among medical professionals, with symptoms becoming more severe such as high fever and body aches, and a notable increase in positive cases post-Dragon Boat Festival holiday. The Health Promotion Administration plans to distribute 3 million self-test kits to around 2,000 clinics nationwide starting from July at a cost of 4.2 million NTD, in collaboration with the Taiwan Medical Association. Officials emphasize vigilance especially among infants, elderly, chronic patients, and pregnant women, urging prompt medical attention for signs of pneumonia. Taiwan's COVID-19 epidemic has entered a new phase of high transmission, with worries about further spikes in October and November as autumn arrives.
