Innovative Materials for Desert Water Harvesting: American Professor Wins Tang Prize for Sustainable Development

Reported 8 months ago

American chemist Omar M. Yaghi received the 'Sustainable Development Award' at the 6th Tang Prize announced on June 18, 2024. Yaghi was recognized for his groundbreaking work in metal-organic and related ultra-porous framework materials, widely used for carbon capture, hydrogen and methane storage, and water harvesting in arid regions, making extraordinary contributions to sustainable development. Yaghi's innovative chemistry field of reticular chemistry has led to the development of materials that efficiently capture and utilize CO2, hydrogen, methane, and water, providing novel solutions for SDGs. His collaborations have resulted in portable MOFs water harvesting devices, successfully collecting hundreds of liters of drinking water daily in desert regions, illustrating the technology's vast potential for sustainable impact.
