Invasive Snakehead Fish Species Invade the U.S.! With Strong Survival Ability to Breathe on Land, Authorities Urge Public to 'Kill on Sight'

Reported 10 months ago

According to Middle Land News on June 10, 2024, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) warned of sightings of an invasive species called Channa argus (commonly known as the Northern Snakehead fish) in Missouri. This fish, which is aggressive and preys on local species, was reported to have been found surviving on land, capable of breathing air. The MDC advised the public to take photos, report sightings, and kill the fish immediately. The species originating from Russia, mainland China, and the Korean Peninsula was first caught in 2019 in Dunklin County. Officials stress the importance of not releasing these fish back into water, as they can survive for an extended period out of water as they can breathe air.
