Following the death of former Iranian President Rafsanjani in May due to a helicopter crash, Iran is set to hold its presidential election on June 28. The Guardian Council of the Iranian Constitution announced the final list of candidates, including current Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf among 6 contenders, while former President Ahmadinejad was once again prohibited from running. The majority of the 6 presidential candidates are from the conservative camp, with Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf considered a frontrunner. The Guardian Council of Iran, composed of Islamic clerics and jurists, is responsible for selecting election candidates, overseen by Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei. Ahmadinejad had previously served as a high-ranking member of the Revolutionary Guard and as mayor of Tehran.
