Iran's Presidential Election: Second Round Between Reformist and Hardliner Candidates

Reported 12 months ago

Following the death of Iranian President in a helicopter crash, the first round of the presidential election ended without any candidate securing a majority. The second round between reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian and hardliner candidate Saeed Jalili is set for July 5th. This election comes after the unexpected death of hardliner President Ebrahim Raisi and involves historically low voter turnout, with only 40% participating. Pezeshkian aims for constructive relations with the West, while Jalili is known for his anti-Western stance. The next president of Iran will be tasked with implementing policies designated by the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
