Iranian Moderate Reformist Wins Election! Masoud Pezeshkian Elected New President

Reported about 1 year ago

On May this year, the incumbent Iranian President Raisi died in a helicopter crash, leading to early presidential elections in Iran. In the second round of voting on the 5th, moderate reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian won, becoming the new president of Iran. Pezeshkian advocated for various reform measures during his campaign, such as relaxing the mandatory headscarf rule and engaging in communication with Western countries. However, as the elected president's power in the politically and religiously unified Iran is limited compared to the Supreme Leader, doubts remain about the extent to which he can implement his reform agenda. The election turnout was historically low, with less than 50% turnout in the second round and only around 40% in the first round.
