Reported about 1 year ago
According to Iranian state media reports on July 7, 2024, an Iranian Navy destroyer, the Sahand, capsized and sank while undergoing maintenance in a port, resulting in multiple injuries. The incident occurred near the port in the southern part of Bandar Abbas, close to the Hormuz Strait, when water entered the Sahand's tanks causing it to capsize. Fortunately, the incident happened in shallow waters, allowing the ship to be stabilized. Several individuals were injured but received medical treatment with no serious injuries reported. The Sahand, named after a mountain in northern Iran, equipped with missiles and advanced radar systems, was built over six years and launched in December 2018 in the Persian Gulf. This incident was attributed to the ship's increased center of gravity due to upgrades since its construction, marking another in a series of Iranian naval mishaps.
