Iraq's efforts to import gas from Turkmenistan through Iran have been thwarted by U.S. pressure, complicating Baghdad's ongoing struggle to alleviate its power shortages. The proposed deal, meant to provide Iraq with up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually, fell through when the U.S. refused to grant necessary approvals, intensifying Iraq's reliance on Iranian gas amidst economic and social challenges. As a result, Iraq is now exploring other options, such as importing liquefied natural gas from Qatar, to address its energy needs.
