IRS delays in resolving identity theft cases criticized by watchdog

Reported 9 months ago

An independent watchdog within the IRS has reported that while taxpayer services have improved, the agency still faces significant delays in resolving identity theft cases, which are deemed 'unconscionable.' The latest National Taxpayer Advocate report to Congress highlighted these delays, noting that the agency took more than 22 months to resolve self-reported identity theft cases as of April, with about 500,000 cases still unresolved. These delays can significantly impact victims, especially those who rely on tax refunds for essential expenses like medical bills or mortgages.
