The IRS has decided to make its free electronic tax return filing system permanent after a successful trial run and is urging all states to participate in the program by 2025. The Direct File project was tested in 12 states during the 2024 tax season, offering free state tax filing assistance to individuals with simple W-2s. Commissioner Danny Werfel stated that expanding the program aligns with the IRS' mission to simplify the tax process and help taxpayers save time and money. The initiative was funded by the Inflation Reduction Act to improve IRS services and support taxpayers better, with over 140,000 individuals using the program during the trial period to claim over $90 million in refunds.
