Israeli War-Time Cabinet Minister Resigns, Calls for New Government Election

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 10, 2024, Israel's war-time cabinet minister Gantz announced his resignation and criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu for not leading the country to a true victory, calling for early elections to form a new government capable of addressing challenges. Although the war-time cabinet has not collapsed, internal divisions on the prospects of the Israel-Hamas war have widened. Gantz, a moderate, former Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff and Defense Minister, has been a political rival of Netanyahu. Amid the ongoing conflict with delays in decision-making and lack of response to critical demands, Gantz urged for immediate elections and the announcement of an election date to establish a trustworthy government. Additionally, the US submitted a new ceasefire proposal to the UN Security Council, urging Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas to release remaining hostages, and both sides to abide by a short-term ceasefire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
