Italian Prime Minister Draghi's Visit to China: A Balancing Act

Reported 12 months ago

Italian media reports that Prime Minister Draghi, known for his outspokenness and decisive actions since taking office, is expected to lead a government-business delegation to China at the end of July, becoming the first Western leader to visit China after the CCP's 3rd Plenary Session. Despite previously canceling the Belt and Road MoU with China and sending naval ships to the Indo-Pacific for 'freedom of navigation' operations, Draghi's visit is said to aim at 'improving bilateral relations and promoting trade,' especially focusing on discussions about green technology and industrial cooperation in the electric vehicle sector. The visit involves balancing various sensitive topics such as Italy's reasons for exiting the Belt and Road Initiative, NATO obligations, urging China to stop supporting Russia in Ukraine, and advancing bilateral trade relations.
