According to a report by BBC on June 18, 2024, two separate shipwrecks occurred in the waters off southern Italy, resulting in at least 11 deaths and over 60 people missing. Rescue operations revealed that the migrants aboard these ships had departed from Libya and Turkey. One boat sank near the island of Lampedusa, leading to the rescue of 51 survivors and the discovery of 10 bodies, while another boat originating from Turkey caught fire and capsized off the Calabrian coast, with 12 survivors and reports of 66 missing, including 26 children, some as young as a few months old. The Mediterranean remains a deadly migration route, with over 23,500 migrants having died or gone missing since 2014.
