Reported 12 months ago

On July 1, 2024, the Youth Daily reported that Italy's Fincantieri Group announced on June 28 that they have secured a new contract from the Italian Ministry of Defense to build the 4th-generation U212 NFS submarine, aiming to enhance Italy's modern underwater combat capabilities. The contract, valued at 500 million euros, signifies the completion of the construction plans for the 4 U212 NFS submarines. The new submarines will replace the retiring Sauro class submarines and work alongside the existing 4 U212A submarines in the Italian Navy's submarine force. The U212 NFS, based on the U212A model, will feature a redesigned exterior, new lithium battery power systems, forthcoming advanced weaponry, and new coatings to improve stealth and quiet performance. The first and second U212 NFS submarines are expected to be completed by 2027 and 2028, respectively, and join active service after sea trials. Fincantieri also held a steel cutting ceremony for the third U212 NFS submarine and Italy's Navy is planning to acquire 2 larger U212 NFS EVO submarines to ultimately expand their underwater strength to 10 vessels, ensuring maritime security for Italy and allied nations in the region.
