Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern issued a joint statement on June 19 expressing concerns over escalating tensions in the South China Sea. They agreed to a principle on intelligence sharing and reiterated the significance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, calling for peaceful resolutions to cross-strait issues. In their statement, Kishida and Ardern strongly condemned North Korea and Russia for bolstering military cooperation, including North Korea sending ballistic missiles to Russia for potential attacks on Ukraine. Both leaders also affirmed plans to enhance economic security cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
