Japan Announces Economic Sanctions on Chinese and Indian Companies for Supporting Russian Military Enterprises in Ukraine Conflict

Reported over 1 year ago

On June 21, 2024, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced that Japan will impose economic sanctions on companies from China, India, the UAE, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan for aiding Russian military enterprises involved in the conflict in Ukraine. This decision came to target entities attempting to evade or circumvent existing sanctions, with the aim of increasing the effectiveness of the sanctions. The Japanese government identified 10 companies in these countries suspected of providing goods for military purposes and prohibited exports from Japan to these entities, while freezing the assets of a shipping-related company in the UAE for importing oil from Russia, hence evading sanctions. Hayashi emphasized that these measures are targeted at groups attempting to circumvent the sanctions, and Japan will continue to work with the G7 and the international community in this regard.
