According to Japanese media reports, Japan has been facing a serious outbreak of Group A Streptococcus (commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria) since January this year. Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control stated that monitoring domestically has shown no abnormalities compared to the trends of the past four years. They will continue to sequence the genes of invasive streptococcal strains in infected cases to understand the pathogenicity and transmissibility. Japan has reported 977 cases of Group A Streptococcus infections, possibly influenced by factors like new pathogenic strains or environmental changes favoring pathogen transmission due to the COVID-19 situation easing and relaxation of preventive measures leading to increased interpersonal contact. Taiwan's situation has remained stable with weekly cases of Group A Streptococcus within the normal range, and no unusual findings in viral strains or outbreaks locally.
