On June 17, 2024, the mayor of Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan revealed plans to potentially increase the ticket prices for Himeji Castle, a World Heritage Site, by about four times to approximately 30 USD (around 970 NTD) specifically targeting foreign tourists. This adjustment is aimed to address issues like overtourism and to provide funding for castle maintenance, with around 45,000 foreign tourists out of a total of 148,000 visitors recorded in 2023. Mayor Kiyomoto Hideyasu expressed the consideration of different pricing for foreigners in an effort to manage sightseeing activities effectively.
