According to a report from Japan's 'Sankei Shimbun' on June 24, 2024, the Japanese Ministry of Defense is considering deploying air self-defense force mobile radar cars on Kitadaito Island, the easternmost part of Okinawa Prefecture, to enhance monitoring and defense capabilities in the southwestern islands. Kitadaito Island is located approximately 360 kilometers east of Okinawa Island, and with the frequent passage of Chinese vessels through the Miyako Strait in southern Okinawa to the western Pacific for training, Japan aims to fill the 'blind spots' in the southwestern islands' surveillance by deploying an air defense radar system on the island to reinforce monitoring capabilities in the western Pacific airspace. The Okinawa Defense Bureau plans to requisition about 8 hectares of land in the northeast and south of the island for construction purposes, and with approximately 30 Self-Defense Force members stationed after the radar car deployment, they aim to complete the deployment work as early as August by seeking approval from local residents through briefings and meetings.
