With a surge in the number of tourists to Japan, local governments are considering imposing accommodation taxes to address various issues caused by the increase in visitors. Hokkaido is planning to introduce an accommodation tax ranging from 100 to 500 Japanese yen per night based on room prices, equivalent to around 20 to 100 New Taiwan Dollars, with the implementation expected as early as spring 2026. The tax is estimated to generate annual revenue of 4.5 billion Japanese yen, approximately 9.3 billion New Taiwan Dollars. Other regions in Japan are also following suit in considering similar taxes, potentially leading to double taxation for tourists.
