Japan Reports Nearly 1,000 Cases of Invasive Streptococcus A Infections, Taiwan CDC Continues Monitoring

Reported 11 months ago

In recent years, Japan has been experiencing an outbreak of invasive Streptococcus A infections, with over 977 cases reported since January, causing streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been monitoring the situation domestically, detecting 22 to 36 cases weekly, in line with trends over the past four years. Despite no abnormal conditions, the CDC continues sequencing the strains of invasive Streptococcus A cases to understand the pathogenicity and transmission. The bacteria, commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria, can lead to severe conditions such as necrotizing fasciitis and STSS, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance due to potential new strains or environmental changes possibly contributing to the increased infections.
