Japan is facing a severe outbreak of 'cannibal bacteria', with over 977 people infected with Streptococcus pyogenes, causing streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) since the beginning of this year. This marks a record high and a 2.8-fold increase from the previous year. The infection can lead to organ failure within 48 hours, with a mortality rate as high as 30% to 50%. Medical experts are urging vigilance among the public, especially the elderly population, and advising prompt medical attention for symptoms like swelling, fever, and throat pain.
