Japan's Ministry of Defense announced its first 'Basic Policy on Promoting the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI),' emphasizing the expansion of AI technology in 7 key areas to address the challenges of declining birthrates and aging population. The policy aims to ensure the proper use of AI technology in compliance with international humanitarian law to reduce large-scale threats and risks, without intending to develop lethal weapons. The focus areas for AI application include target identification, information collection and analysis, command and control, logistic support, unmanned vehicles, cybersecurity, and administrative tasks, to enhance data processing efficiency, image recognition, and predictive analysis for maintaining national security. Defense Minister Nobuaki Ishihara highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in the AI field and emphasized Japan's commitment to enhancing defense capabilities through civilian cooperation, recruiting specialized talent, and complying with international laws and regulations.
