In response to the unstable security environment in East Asia, Japan's Self-Defense Forces have shifted their defense focus southwestward over the past 10 years, with a 40% increase in SDF facilities in Okinawa Prefecture and a doubling of joint exercises with overseas countries. The SDF has been strengthening defense cooperation with various partners in the land, sea, and air domains, expanding from the U.S. to Europe and Southeast Asia. These efforts include increased joint training and the establishment of a Maritime Operations Center publicly disclosed by the Maritime Self-Defense Force. Japan's defense posture aims to address regional security concerns, with particular emphasis on enhanced deterrence against China's actions in the East China Sea and around Taiwan.
