Reported by Shen Nengyuan/Taipei on June 9, 2024, 6:20 PM, Japan's 'Yomiuri Shimbun' reported that the number of cases of 'Streptococcus pyogenes' causing 'Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome' (STSS) has reached a record high of 977 this year, surpassing the total of 941 cases from the previous year, marking a 2.8-fold increase. Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated that there is currently no specific 'cannibal bacteria' epidemic in the country, reassuring the public. Symptoms of 'cannibal bacteria' infection include sudden high fever, swelling and pain in limbs, and the possibility of multiple organ failure within hours leading to shock, with a mortality rate of 30% to 50%, especially affecting the elderly and diabetic patients. The CDC added that while cases of infection by 'Streptococcus pyogenes' are typically recoverable, individuals such as children, elderly people, diabetics, dialysis patients, cancer patients, and those with wounds are at a higher risk of fatality, urging preventive measures such as wearing masks and maintaining hand hygiene to avoid infection.
