Japanese convenience stores, known for their diverse and convenient food offerings, as well as their 24/7 operation, are significant contributors to food waste. Research shows that on 'Setsubun' day alone, over 55,000 convenience stores in Japan discarded 947,000 sushi rolls, highlighting a significant issue of wasted food. Each major chain convenience store in Japan is estimated to discard an average of 4.68 million Japanese yen (approximately 95.9 thousand New Taiwan dollars) worth of food per year per branch, leading to a total annual loss exceeding 260 billion Japanese yen (approximately 5.33 billion New Taiwan dollars). This food waste not only signifies a loss of money and resources but also contributes to carbon emissions from food production, transportation, and disposal, exacerbating climate change.
