Tomorrow, on July 3rd, Japan's new banknotes will be officially issued. The new banknotes incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting technology, raising production costs by about 13% compared to current paper banknotes. The Japan National Printing Bureau manufactures the banknotes, with the Bank of Japan covering manufacturing and recycling costs. In the 2023 fiscal year, the production cost of the new banknotes amounted to 619.25 billion yen (approximately 125 billion TWD), with a total of 3.03 billion banknotes produced at a cost of 20.4 yen each. The increased cost is attributed to rising raw material prices and the adoption of new anti-counterfeiting technologies.
