Japanese politician Renho, a senator from the Constitutional Democratic Party, announced her candidacy for Tokyo Governor in May 2024, sparking a hotly contested race against the incumbent Yuriko Koike. However, her office received threatening fax messages warning of assassination, acid attacks, and bombings by unidentified individuals. Renho reported the threats to the police, who are investigating the matter. The threats have raised concerns for her safety, especially following the street stabbing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. Renho's office condemned the threats as a challenge to democracy and stated they will take measures to ensure her safety during campaign events.
