According to SET News, on June 28, 2024, the village of Oma in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, known for its fishing industry, annually holds a Mazu circumambulation event on the third Monday of July known as the 'Day of the Sea.' The event, which originated in 1696 to thank Mazu for saving a villager at sea, involves a blend of Japanese and Taiwanese cultural rituals with processions featuring traditional Japanese elements like Kagura and divine palanquins. The successful event has resulted in a boost in belief in Mazu and improved fisheries in the region.
