On July 8, 2014, Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, Baltimore, announced that due to a $1 billion donation from media mogul and former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg's foundation, the majority of medical students will be able to attend tuition-free. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden for aspiring medical professionals, benefitting about two-thirds of medical school students. With Bloomberg's total donations to the university reaching $4.55 billion, various programs across Johns Hopkins, including the School of Public Health, have been named in his honor for supporting students with financial aid.
