On June 25, 2024, the Kaohsiung City Government officially established a sister city relationship with Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts and Nevis, making it Kaohsiung's 40th alliance city. Mayor Chen Chi-mai hopes this deepens the city relationship to strengthen ties, with Basseterre looking forward to collaborating in areas such as smart cities, agriculture, and healthcare. The visit also included sightseeing activities and discussions on mutual cooperation and exchanges between the two island nations.
