Kaohsiung Man Dies After Contracting 'Brain-Eating Amoeba' - Prompt Medical Attention Needed for 3 Symptoms

Reported 8 months ago

A man in Kaohsiung sought emergency care for a headache and was found to have diffuse brain lesions caused by an infection of the 'Naegleria fowleri' amoeba, commonly known as the 'brain-eating amoeba.' Despite treatment, the man tragically passed away. Doctors warn that this amoeba, found in stagnant water sources like streams and mountain springs, can enter the brain through the nasal cavity, causing encephalitis and brain lesions with a 90% fatality rate. It is important to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing headache, vomiting, and neck stiffness after water activities in stagnant waters during the summer.
