Kaohsiung Man Dies After Month-Long Hospitalization Due to Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection, Doctor Warns Against Risky Water Activities

Reported about 1 year ago

A man in Kaohsiung sought medical help for chronic headaches and loss of appetite, and was diagnosed with diffuse cerebral edema and infiltrative infection caused by the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri. Despite treatment, the man passed away about a month after diagnosis due to high brain pressure and severe cerebral edema. A neurosurgeon from Chang Gung Hospital in Kaohsiung highlighted the dangers of this amoeba, found in rivers and mountain springs, with an over 90% mortality rate if it enters the brain through the nasal passage. The doctor advised the public to avoid submerging their heads in water while in natural water sources to prevent such infections.
