A nationwide anti-tax movement initiated by Kenya's Z Generation through social media culminated in violent clashes between police and protesters in cities like Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa on June 20th. As Kenya's Parliament passed the 2024 Finance Bill with 204 votes in favor to 115 against, the new tax measures, including a 16% value-added tax on bread and doubling the VAT on petroleum products to 16%, are set to be implemented after the third reading on the 27th. Opposition against the tax increases highlighted the burden on the country's 51.5 million population, with one-third being impoverished, triggering adjustments to the proposed tax on items like bread and cars. Despite some revisions to the tax plan, dissenting groups still call for its withdrawal, denouncing it as punitive.
